HIGHLIGHTS

  • The OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter lens will be deactivated through a software update
  • Updates will only be launched to HydrogenOS running units in China
  • The phone’s Color Filter Lens has been reported to see objects and even clothing

After announcing that the OnePlus 8 Pro color filter lens will be deactivated in the future through a software update, OnePlus has clarified that improvements will only come to the Chinese version of the phone running HydrogenOS for now, and not the OxygenOS variant of devices found elsewhere – including countries like India and the United States.

The information comes from a post by the company in its forums where it seeks to provide further clarity about upcoming changes. That clarifies that the color filter camera will be deactivated in the Chinese market before the end of the week. It further added that the planned update for HydrogenOS users is a temporary fix, and the company plans to bring the Color Filter lens back to OnePlus 8 Pro.

However, it does not stop there. In the post, OnePlus also added that it has no immediate plans to disable color filter cameras in the US or international markets. Although these markets will get a fix, the company finally decides to solve the existing problem.

The OnePlus step to deactivate the camera on HydrogenOS phones comes after news about the OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter lens that can see through several objects and even clothing. This behavior is observed when photos are clicked using Photochrom mode in certain situations. Since then, this problem has become even more confusing for OnePlus, which since the launch of OnePlus 8 Pro has talked about Color Filter lenses as the unique thing is clicking photos with fake color filters on them.

But instead, the OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter lens that is able to see through certain surfaces because it is sensitive to IR light and can capture light that is outside the visible spectrum has created many privacy problems for users.

Apart from the 5-megapixel Color Filter lens, OnePlus 8 Pro also gets powerful camera hardware. At its heart is the 48-megapixel Sony IMX689 main lens which is located next to a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens that offers a 120-degree field of view. Both have been paired with an 8 megapixel telephoto lens and a 5 megapixel color filter lens. At the front, we have a Sony IMX471 lens with a 16-megapixel sensor size.

This phone is currently sold in India and is available in two memory and storage variants, with an entry-level variant of 8GB + 128GB available at a price of Rs 54,999. High-end variants with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage have been priced at Rs 59,999.
