The Last of Us: Part II finally approaching us, and when new details emerge we get a better idea of how the long-awaited sequel will play. One new thing we learned, thanks to the Inside the Gameplay video below, is that you won’t be able to improve Ellie completely in one play.
Kurt Margenau, game co-director, explains in the video (around 7:30 a.m.) that The Last of Us: Part II will feature a separate weapon and player enhancement system, but you will not be able to get the resources needed to fully improve Ellie in one single game. This is because the game focuses on the consequences of your choice, and that includes the skills you decide to focus on.
Naughty Dogs want players to make choices and then be forced to live with them, and for that even the chosen upgrade system needs to have a “very real and real impact” on how you play. So, if you decide to add one of Ellie’s abilities, it probably means you can never fully develop other abilities, for example.
This means that the players will experience Ellie’s “build” differently, and it seems the intention is that this will have an impact on how you experience the game’s story. Although you can’t completely update Joel in the original game until you press New Game Plus, it doesn’t fundamentally change the game’s narrative, or your character’s taste, in any way. By the way, the video also warns that you will be inclined miss the whole moment of the story in your first playthrough.
The Last of Us: Part II release for PlayStation 4 on June 19. If you don’t have a system to play it, see limited edition The Last of Us: Part II of the PlayStation 4 Pro model.
