The third iteration of Alienware m17 is here and is even better than the previous model. Alienware m17 R3, the new Intel 10H Gen Series processor and Nvidia Super GPU, is a formidable force in the gaming laptop arena. Not only is a laptop powerful, but it also has an intergalactic elegance which is a bona fide headturner. This is also one of the lightest desktop replacements on the market. Plus, you get a truly stunning 4K display that is worth the price of admission.
Speaking of price, this pretty and powerful thing doesn’t come cheap and the price of $ 3,529 ($ 1,549 early) is very expensive. In addition, below average battery life is not an interesting feature. However, for the money, Alienware m17 R3 is one of them the best gaming laptop hardcore fans can buy.
Price and configuration of Alienware m17 R3
Alienware m17 R3 starts at $ 1,549 and has a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-10750H processor with 16GB RAM, 256GB PCIe M.2 SSD, Intel UHD Graphics GPU, AMD Radeon RX 5500M with 4GB VRAM and 17.3 inch screen, 1920 x screen 1080p 144Hz.
The $ 2,249 midtier model doubles RAM and gives you two 256GB PCIe M.2 SSDs in RAID 0 configurations, Intel UHD GPUs, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super GPUs with 8GB VRAM and 17.3-inch screens, 1920 x 1080-pixel displays with refresh rates 144Hz.
I had fun driving a model that was completely cheated. It’s $ 3,529, which is beyond the reach of most gamers (myself included), but it is very powerful. This system has an Intel Core i9-10980HK 2.4 GHz, 32GB RAM, a pair of 1TB PCIe m.2 SSD in RAID 0 configuration, Intel UHD Graphics GPU, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super GPU with 8GB VRAM and 3840 x 2160 panel.
Alienware Design m17 R3
The industrial design of Alienware’s Legend continues to impress with its development on intergalactic battle stations. Magnesium alloys, colored by what the company calls Lunar Light, remind me of the space station or ship that I have seen over the years in several of my favorite science fiction films and shows. This large, glowing alien head takes place near the top center of the lid with a large “17” geometric print printed in the lower left corner. On the back of the laptop, you will find a black hole that also holds several major ports (more on that later).
At the bottom of the laptop is a pair of raised legs and some large honeycomb-shaped vents designed to spread hot air.
Opening a laptop gives you more results from the beautiful Lunar Light along the palm rest and keyboard deck. The touchpad is located just below the keyboard, which is in a bit of a break. A series of air vents enter above the keyboard in the form of small hexagons with a backlit alien head playing the power button. Black bezel surrounds the screen with a thicker lower chin stamped with “Alienware” with silver letters. You will find Tobii’s eye tracker directly below.
By the way, if Lunar Light is not yours, this laptop is also present in the Dark Side of the Moon – the final result is charcoal black.
For desktop replacement, Alienware m17 R3 is quite lightweight. The 15.7 x 11.8 x 0.7 ~ 0.8 inches laptop weighs only 6.6 pounds. This is much lighter than that Acer Predator Triton 900 (9 pounds, 16.9 x 11.9 x 0.9 inches), that is MSI GT76 Titan (9.9 pounds, 15.6 x 12.9 x 1.3 ~ 1.7 inches) Asus ROG Mothership (10.5 pounds, 16.1 x 12.6 x 1.2 pounds).
Port Alienware m17 R3
Do you want a port? M17 R3 has the port and then some. You got two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port and a microSD card slot on the right. There’s another USB Type-A 3.2 port on the left with an Ethernet port and a headset jack. The majority of ports are behind where you will find Thunderbolt port 3, HDMI 2.0, a Mini DisplayPortDC jacks and proprietary ports for Alienware Graphic Booster if you want to increase power.
Alienware m17 R3 screen
Man, do I like a 4K panel, especially on Alienware systems. I have not seen anything that is not too bright or bright. The same thing applies here. Watching the trailer for Miss Virginia, the bronze skin of actress Uzo Aduba looks great there 17.3 inch screenEspecially when placed on her cranberry blouse with a blood-red floral pattern. The details are sharp enough so that I see almost all of the curly curls in the neat afro.
Trials of Mana is already a beautiful game, but playing it on the m17 R3 screen seems to only improve the visual. The details are so clean that I can see a small crack in the castle brick when I look for my brother. The world itself is a bright color scheme, from the crystal blue sky to the pink fire that envelops my character’s former home.
Like most 4K panels, the m17 R3 has a 60Hz refresh rate, which makes the gameplay quite smooth. However, I really want to take a 1080p panel with a refresh rate of 300Hz for rotation. With almost no pause, my shots landed where and when I wanted, making for more accurate attacks and attacks that look and feel much more surgical. I also hope Alienware finds a way to bring Dell’s sleek InfinityEdge bezel to the Alienware system.
In line with the clarity of Alienware’s characteristics, m17 R3 reproduces 166% of sRGB color gamut. That’s more than the average 144% premium gaming laptop as well as 102% and 157% prepared by Mothership and Titan. However, Triton is only slightly clearer, at 166%.
The m17 R3 screen is also serious light, an average of 591 nits. It easily beats the 337-nit average category as well as Mothership (286 nits), Triton (324 nits) and Titan (376 nits).
Alienware m17 R3 eye tracking
Tobii and Alienware continue to work together to improve your gaming experience. The Tobii eye tracking sensor is embedded in the hinge, just below the base cover. When activated, the tracker allows you to control the computer using only your eyes. After a quick calibration session, clear lumps appear wherever I look at the screen.
This technology has many uses which include games and productivity. Tobii currently supports more than 150 games including Hitman, Far Cry 5, Valkyrie Warzone and Assedin’s Creed Odyssey. Not only technology can control the camera in the game, but you also have the ability to control your goals or put your character into the lid, depending on the title.
For example, when I play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I adjust the camera with a glance. And if I see the sun or moon, the screen brightness is adjusted automatically so that I always have an optimal viewing experience. Seeing the enemy allows me to tag them so that I can plan my attack strategy. And of course, you can give a purposeful reticle just by looking at your prospective target.
Tobii can also be used during Twitch stream, so viewers can watch reflexes as fast as lightning as you break down enemies.
Tobii also functions as a utility of power and productivity. You can not only wake your laptop just by looking, but also set the technology to dim the screen when you are not looking. Tobii can also function as a kind of mouse, giving you the ability to launch applications or appear wherever you look, like a regular cursor.
Audio Alienware m17 R3
A pair of bottom-firing m17 R3 speakers is good, not great. Especially, when I came to review Dell XPS 15 and that’s the “knock your socks off” audio. Alienware needs to find a way to bring audio excellence to this generation STAT laptop. But let’s talk about what we are working on.
Listening to Jill Scott’s live version “He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat)” is a treat on Alienware. Bass guitar crashing – I can almost see musicians dipping to get a certain twang. The trumpet is nice and full, the cymbal and drum are crisp, and the piano is strong. Scott’s vocal range is displayed in full screen as is his backup singer.
When I started playing Trials of Mana, the music was a little uphill. The narration is clear and crisp and the music has the right spirit to make the opening song sound magnificent. Flutes, horns, and strings in perfect harmony. During battles, the war cry of my character can clearly be heard through fighting music that is uplifting.
If the sound doesn’t match, try playing with eight audio presets in the Alienware Command Center. Of the eight (Music, Film, Com, Racing, Role Play, Shooter, Strategy and Alienware), Music and Role Play are two of my favorite presets because they provide the most complete audio.
Alienware m17 R3 keyboard and touchpad
Alienware m17 R3 keyboard and touchpad The m17 R3 keyboard is as beautiful as the pictures. The chiclet keyboard flickers in a beautiful rainbow spectrum, which looks better towards Lunar Light than the Dark Side of the Moon IMHO. The keyboard is spacious and has a complete numpad. And, as usual, you can modify the backlight on the keyboard and the alien head and rear vent with 16.8 million colors and one of the five effects available (Spectrum, Morph, Pulse, Color, and Breathing).
But the keyboard is not just for show. It also provides a good typing experience with deep key travel and strong actuation. I pressed 77 words per minute on my 10 fastfingers typing test, which is better than my usual 70 wpm.
The touchpad is smooth and gives you enough space to navigate web pages or documents. Windows 10 gestures such as pinch-zoom and three-finger tap are easy to do with instant response. The lower right corner of the touchpad provides an audible response when clicking right or left mouse.
Alienware m17 R3 gaming, graphics and VR
Armed with Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super GPU with 8GB VRAM, there is very little Alienware m17 R3 can’t do. No matter how demanding the game, laptops consistently install high frame rates. I fought off several deadly assassins in the Mana Experiment, gracefully avoiding a deadly blow while answering with my own shot. I connected with my spear and sent my enemy at 61 frames per second at high at 4K. And when I dropped the resolution to 1920 x 1080, the frame rate rose to 102 fps. And for times when I don’t want to save the world, laptops will move on to the world Intel UHD Graphics GPU integrated.
The R3 M17 stands basically during our gaming benchmarks, printing 74 fps on the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark. That’s enough to sail past the average 68-fps premium game. However, with their own RTX 2080 GPU, Predator and Titan reached 79 fps while Mothership gained 91 fps. In 4K, it is a three-way bond between Alienware, Acer and MSI (28 fps).
In the Grand Theft Auto V test, the m17 R3 reaches 98 fps, beating an average of 84-fps. Titan, Predator, and Mothership each scored 105, 106, and 108 fps. In 4K, Alienware equaled Titan at 34 fps and defeated 32 fps Predator.
During Metro: Exodus, Alienware posted 70 fps, beating Titan’s 60-fps and 78 fps averages. Mothership and Predator are slightly higher, at 78 and 71 fps. With a resolution at 4K, the R3 m17 binds Titan at 34 fps while the Predator reaches 39 fps.
Alienware notched 11 on the SteamVR Performance test, matching the Predator, Mothership, Titan and category average.
Performance of Alienware m17 R3
Alienware loads m17 R3 with overclock, octa-core Intel Core i9-10980HK Gen 10 processor with 32GB RAM and two 1TB PCIe m.2 SSD. That is a huge power, and it certainly helps me well. I followed the episode The Dragon Prince Netflix. Even though it runs 40 Google Chrome tabs in the background with a myriad of streams, videos and other CPU-draining activities, my stream runs endlessly.
This laptop keeps performance on our synthetic benchmarks. It notched 29,955 in Geekbench 4.3 overall performance testing, beating an average premium gaming laptop of 26,094 and Predator (Core i7-9750H) 24,950. However, Titan (Core i9-9900HK) and Mothership (Core i9-9980HK) reached 32,167 and 34,879, respectively.
When we ran the Handbrake test, m17 R3 transcoded 4K video to 1080p in 7 minutes and 16 seconds. That’s a lot faster than the average 8:57 and Predator 9:55. But both Titan and Mothership defeated the competition by 5:51 and 5:50.
Dual SSD m17 R3 duplicates 4.97GB of multimedia files in 5 seconds with a transfer speed of 1082.8 megabytes per second. This is better than the Predator (1TB M.2 PCIe SSD, 848MBps) and 866.2MBps category average. Mothership (dual 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, 1272.5MBps) and Titan (2TB NVMe PCIe SSD, 1451.1MBps) are both faster.
Alienware m17 R3 battery
With all that power … it’s so short battery life. All these strong specifications mean you want to keep your m17 R3 close to a wall outlet. This laptop only lasts for 2 hours 30 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery test (continuous web surfing via Wi-Fi with a brightness of 150 nits). That’s longer than Predator 1:48, but not the average premium gaming laptop 4:14, Titan (3:45) and Mothership (4:41).
Alienware m17 R3 is hot
After running 15 minutes of full-screen HD video, we measure strategic points on the laptop. The touchpad measured 79 degrees Fahrenheit, which is below our 95 degree comfort threshold. The middle of the keyboard reaches 92 degrees while the bottom reaches 93 degrees.
Webcam Alienware m17 R3
Alienware has one of the best integrated web camera in the market. In the photo shoot test I took, my skin practically glowed. The shooter also captures the exact color of my mustard shirt. It even caught a lot of my pandemic hair color. The details are clean enough for me to see folds of paper bags behind me.
Alienware m17 R3 software and warranty
Alienware software that was previously installed on m17 R3, including Alienware Mobile Connect, allows you to transfer files (photos, documents and videos) between your smartphone and PC. This software also allows you to access smartphone applications on a laptop. This laptop also has an Alienware Update, which ensures that your BIOS, drivers and firmware are up to date while Digital Deliveries updates your Dell and Windows 10 software. Need to solve a problem? See My Alienware, which has Alienware Support, a tool that connects you with technical support representatives.
In addition to setting the backlight and changing audio presets, the Alienware Command Center is also a place where you can launch games, create macros and overclock the system.
Killer Control Center and Nvidia GeForce Experience is a third-party gamer-centric application that allows you to prioritize network bandwidth and optimize your game settings for gameplay.
The bottom line of Alienware m17 R3
Alienware m17 R3 lives at the intersection of beauty and strength. Laptops are one of the lightest desktop replacements on the market and feature sophisticated designs that you don’t often see on gaming laptops. But beyond the stunning looks, you have a laptop that is loaded with some very powerful components that produce the high-level performance you expect from a notebook of this caliber. Throw in a beautiful 4K display and a comfortable keyboard and you have time to do it.
But if you are looking for a longer battery life and more power, you might want to check out the Asus ROG Mothership. However, if you think the m17 R3 is very expensive, at $ 3,549, you will definitely refuse strongly at Mothership’s $ 5,499. The MSI GT76 Titan is also a viable option for $ 4,599. But if you are looking for a mixture of aesthetics and great performance, Alienware m17 R3 is the first choice.
