That iPhone 12 it’s still four months (or maybe even longer, if a delay occurs) but we already know a lot about what to expect, and the arrival of the main rumors of the iPhone 13 has refocused my attention.
This leak has made me anticipate for the iPhone 12. I wrote a lot about the next iPhone, and I am very happy with what we can expect from one of the biggest cellphones this year … but the iPhone 2021 can produce a big step that is not much predicted.
What is this iPhone 13 leak (or whatever it is called as iPhone 2021) maybe fully portless. It’s not a USB-C device as many have hoped – this is a leak that says that your iPhone in 2021 won’t have a port at all.
It is not a headphone jack (obviously), there is no charging port and no SIM card slot. Big change, right?
This leak came from Jon Prosser who had shared accurate information about the new iPhone SE and MacBook Pro 13 before one of the products is announced. Prosser also shares a variety of other leaks on the iPhone 12, but we clearly don’t know if the information rings true.
Prosser tweeted, “One portless iPhone is coming next year”. This is also not the first time we’ve heard this rumor – famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said something similar in the past. He also clarified that the iPhone would pass the USB-C altogether, and chose portless rather than ever using charging technology that is now widely embraced.
☝️ yes. One portless iPhone is coming next year. Never USB-C. Eventually, they will all be portless.May 13, 2020
A truly portless phone is a possibility nowadays; it’s just that there are no manufacturers who dare to take all the ports on the line. We have seen two devices that show how the technology works, but none are available.
That the first fully portless smartphone in the world is Meizu Zero, which was introduced in 2019 but the device was finally canceled and never made it to the market. Then there is the concept phone designed by Oppo calls Apex which followed later that year, but that was also not easy to sell.
Since then, it has been silent from the telephone maker. We haven’t seen any manufacturers announcing devices that don’t have ports, and it’s very different from Apple to be the first to make such a big step.
In fact, we also haven’t seen any leakage or rumors about a truly portless Android device.
All of this said, if the iPhone 13 was the first big phone to do it, I would be very surprised. Given that the device is likely to be launched in September 2021, there is plenty of time for Android manufacturers to beat Apple. Apple might still be one of the first, and it might be one of the next big trends 5G and folding telephone.
Dive at the deepest
You might ask, why does Apple even want to have a portless phone? This might sound like a trick at first, but there might be some sense for devices that don’t have ports at all.
By moving to a Bluetooth headset to listen to audio, wireless charging proliferation and recognition eSIM technology; this is not out of the realm of the possibility of being a useful device.
Cleaning the port device will allow the phone to last longer because it removes the area where the hair can be trapped or the cable back can be broken. It might even allow the company to increase its IP rating to make its device more waterproof and dustproof.
The most interesting element is the extra space inside the cell phone can be used to increase the size of the battery or enter further storage. Maybe even Apple decided to make the phone thinner too. I know that I personally prefer a larger and more durable battery than a slimmer cellphone.
Not the first time
Many cannot forget that Apple was one of the first telephone manufacturers to drop a 3.5mm headphone jack. Among all the jokes needed “courage” to do it, it would be suitable that the company would also be willing to drop another port from its device.
Familiarizing yourself with a truly portless iPhone might be difficult at first. Immediately I thought about how I wouldn’t be able to take photos from my phone via cable – yes, that’s something I still do – but it would likely be something that we are accustomed to as quickly as with the 3.5mm jack in 2017
The rest of 2020 is likely to be dedicated to the iPhone 12 (plus various other products like Apple Watch 6 and maybe even Apple glasses) but the 2021 device has caught my attention and I might have trouble refocusing on the new iPhone.
