Dr. Chris Whitty accepts grills from Robert Peston of ITV regarding Germany’s strong performance in handling the corona virus compared with the response of the British Government. The Chief Medical Officer pointed to Germany’s superior testing capacity as the reason why this nation outperformed Britain in dealing with COVID-19.

Chris Whitty said: “We all know that Germany is advancing in terms of its ability to carry out virus testing and there is much to be learned from it.

“We have tried to learn from it.”

Robert Peston from ITV tweeted in response: “I was very surprised at that @ CMO_England said that lessons from Germany, which have lower mortality rates than Britain, are tests more people with # Covid19 symptoms than us. “

Conservative MP last week Tobias Ellwood explain why Germany coronavirus the testing capacity is greater than the capacity of the UK.

Ellwood told BBC Newsnight: “It is very important when you make a comparison of countries to see what is happening.

“Spain did a lot of testing, but they produced tests that didn’t work.

“They made a big mistake because the equipment was broken.

“In Germany, the Roche company which is a global diagnostic company is actually one of the five largest biological laboratories in the world.

“They can do these things on the site.”

Around the world there have been more than 1,300,000 COVID-19 cases.

The death toll has reached more than 78,000 at the time of writing.

More than 294,000 people have recovered from coronaviruses worldwide.

The United States has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world with more than 377,000 confirmed cases.
