Metro Detroit and Michigan hospitals have been recognized as some of the best in the country and in the world by the American news magazine Newsweek.
For the third year in a row, Newsweek has published the “World’s Best Hospital 2021, “Where global data is used to identify the top 2,000 hospitals in 25 countries, including the US, Japan, Germany, UK, India, Australia, Thailand and others. Hospitals that are in the top 200 of the list hail from a variety of states, but the top three are in the US: Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Cleveland Clinic in Ohio; and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, in that order.
Michigan doesn’t make the top five, or top ten, in the world, but it does make it into the top 30, with University of Michigan Hospital Michigan Medicine is ranked 23 in the world.
No other Michigan hospital is in the top 200 in the world – but a few are still on Newsweek’s list.
Beaumont Health hospitals in Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak and Troy, Michigan are not ranked among the world’s top 200 hospitals, but they are among the top 200 hospitals in the US:
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak was ranked 129 in the US
Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe is ranked 154 in the US
Beaumont Hospital, Troy is ranked 172 in the US

According to Newsweek, hospitals are ranked based on data collected through a partnership with Statista which focuses on recommendations from medical experts, results from patient surveys, and key medical performance indicators such as patient safety, quality measures, and quality of care.
Five other Michigan hospitals are among the US’s top 200 hospitals:
St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea is ranked 66th in the US
Henry Ford Hospital, in Detroit, is ranked 110th in the US
Sparrow Hospital, in Lansing, is ranked 144 in the US
Holland Hospital is ranked 155th in the US
Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is ranked 193th in the US
Mclaren Northern Michigan Hospital is ranked 236th in the US, and St. Joseph Mercy in Ann Arbor is rated 334 in the US
