This is a significant increase at the previous daily height of 786 deaths.
However, Deputy Chief Scientific Adviser Professor Dame Angela McLean said new cases were not “accelerated out of control”.
“I suspect that a simple strategy might turn out to be the best to use, but we’ll see,” he said.
The total number of confirmed infections rose to nearly 61,000 from 282,000 test people.
Government experts estimate hundreds of thousands of people are infected with coronavirus in the UK.

Although the death rate is increasing, McLean says there is “good news” in the number of new cases every day, which is a better indicator of whether remote action works than death.
“The count of this new case in the UK, day after day for the past few weeks, has not accelerated out of control,” he said.

NHS UK’s national medical director, Professor Stephen Powis warned that “this is not the time to be complacent”, however.
“I began to see the benefits, I believe (following the government’s steps), but the very important thing, I believe, is that we must continue to follow instructions, we must continue to follow social distance because if we don’t, the virus will start to spread again, “He said.
