CHICAGO – (WIRE BUSINESS) – May 21, 2020–
The NHS Foundation Trust’s Gloucestershire Hospital, located in the United Kingdom, has successfully broadcast live with the latest additions to Allscripts electronic health records, even though a new coronavirus outbreak is ongoing.
The Trust decided to use Sunrise EHR as a ‘clinical wrapper’ around the patient administration system that existed last year and aired it with nursing documentation and risk assessment only five months later.
On March 17, 2020, the Trust added e-observations functionality, which included automatic NEWS2 calculations, a national early warning score designed to pick up patients at risk of damage. The implementation of NEWS2 immediately helped the Trust manage patients during the COVID-19 outbreak. Gloucestershire Hospital has also added an icon to the patient tracking board to identify patients with COVID-19 and provide results through the system.
“While we were in the midst of planning COVID-19, I was very proud of our nursing staff for implementing e-observation and an impressive commitment to make it work. This is good for our patients and good for our clinical team, “said Professor Steve Hams, Director of Quality and Head of Nurse Trust.
“We know that moving patient observations to Sunrise EHR will bring great benefits to our two acute hospitals and have planned our launch for March. So when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the UK, we needed to make a quick decision on whether to proceed or not. “We are in control and putting additional staff on our ward to make sure we do this right, at a challenging time for our hospital,” said Mark Hutchinson, CDIO executive.
“Having e-observation has proven important in managing our patients during the coronavirus pandemic. Our acute care response team can manage caseloads, senior nursing staff can use data to manage staffing, and we can track the number and location of patients supported by oxygen. “
The UK Allscripts team has moved quickly to support Trusts such as the Gloucestershire Hospital who want to continue go-life that will help their staff and patients through a pandemic. This has created a Go-Live Virtual Office with a 24/7 virtual meeting room with voice and video capabilities, structured documents, and screen sharing tools.
The office is connected to the floor messaging application, so team members can find out problems when they are identified in the wards and clinics, before they enter the help-desk system.
For the Gloucestershire Hospital that is airing, the virtual office is managed with various team members based in various countries around the world, so the Trust team can visit anytime.
“When the NHS Acute Trust began dealing with more and more people with COVID-19, Sunrise’s flexibility proved to be the main tool to help them identify and manage these patients,” said Richard Strong, Managing Director of Allscripts, EMEA. “It was a brave decision for the Gloucestershire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to introduce new functionality to record patient observations and improve patient management that is deteriorating amid the large organizational changes needed to prepare for a pandemic. But it was truly the right decision, and one Allscripts was determined to support. We move quickly to new ways of working to fully support 24/7 go-life, without endangering the health of our staff, NHS staff, or patients by carrying out traditional support and floor walking activities. We were moving towards this way of working before COVID-19 closed, but we accelerated our schedule to encourage long-distance work on time for the Gloucestershire Hospital to air. We now use these tools to support other NHS customers who want to continue with functions that will help them, their staff and patients at this very difficult time. “
