CAIRO (AP) — The U.N. refugee company says Libya’s coast guard has rescued about 70 Europe-bound migrants after days in misery within the Mediterranean Sea.
UNHCR says Sunday the folks have disembarked again in Libya. The day before today, it mentioned a ship carrying at the least 50 migrants capsized within the Mediterranean.
Coast guard spokesman Ayoub Gassim mentioned the shipwreck came about off the western metropolis of Misrata, 187 kilometers (116 miles) east of the capital, Tripoli.
Alarm Cellphone, an impartial help group for folks crossing the Mediterranean, mentioned Saturday a second boat for migrants was in misery, with “about 56 lives in danger.”
Libya grew to become a significant conduit for African migrants and refugees fleeing to Europe after the rebellion that toppled and killed Moammar Gadhafi in 2011.
