El Paso, Texas (Scope Of Report) — Border patrol chase over the weekend ended in a deadly crash and a brief search of the driver.
The American guards tried to stop the suspect car before the driver sped off, around 6:20 a.m. Sunday near Bracketville, Texas, U.S. customs and border protection said in a press release.
The agents said they lost sight of the vehicle, but located it a short time later after he crashed and rolled over.
Agents from the del Rio sector found that some of the passengers died and other got seriously injured. Agents provided assistance before medical staff arrived.
SBP says the driver fled but was later arrested.
In a statement, the Agency did not specify how many people were killed or injured. But Del Rio news-Herald reported that the deaths of two Mexican nationals in what officials believed was an attempt at human smuggling.
