WASHINGTON (AP) – Congress leaders shake with others coronavirus rescue package because President Donald Trump indicated that America would need more help during the pandemic and economic closure.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said another $ 1 trillion was needed, outside of the $ 2.2 trillion effort that had just been passed. He wants one round of direct payments to America and more money for companies to continue to make payroll. Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell said in recent days that health care must be top of the list, signaling his intention to start working with the new law.
“We will take care of our people,” Trump said Monday at his daily White House briefing. “It’s not their fault.”
This is a rare sign of the consensus that emerged when Washington responded to a public health emergency and the severe economic downfall that ravaged society nationally, a crisis equivalent to a war effort or the Great Depression.
The contours of the package are still being debated and every vote in Congress remains a logistical puzzle. The building and the Senate were suspended for most of the month, as part of a permanent home order from public health officials to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus.
In an afternoon conference call with Democrat House, Pelosi told lawmakers at least $ 1 trillion would be needed, according to someone unauthorized to discuss the call and provide anonymity.
California Democrats have promised to put together the next package just in time for the Parliamentary vote this month.
Former Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen joined a personal call and warned Democrats that the economic downturn would depend on public health responses to the pandemic, the person said. When businesses close to stop the spread of the virus, it has thrown the US economy toward recession.
Yellen said it was impossible to know how deep and long the recession would be, and added that it would depend on the health response.
The former Fed chairman also told them that the country’s unemployment rate is now at least 13% and this week’s unemployment report will show a higher figure than last week.
Yellen said she expected a 30 percent contraction of GDP this year, but had seen models as high as 50 percent, according to an unauthorized Democratic aide to discuss the call and refused to be named.
The previous aid package, which was approved at the end of March, included a one-time direct payment of 1,200 dollars to the United States, along with a small business loan that was inexcusable for the company to continue to pay. It also includes increases in unemployment salaries, money for hospitals and $ 500 billion in funds for larger companies and industries.
Pelosi told Democrats that a direct payment of $ 1,200 to America and a salary protection program for small businesses is not enough and more needs to be done, the person said.
He also said there needed to be more help through the Additional Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps.
Trump prefers direct checks to America, and gives another nod in the next package.
“This is really under serious consideration,” he said.
The shift from political leaders is very sharp amid what officials warn could be one of the toughest weeks for the country, as the number of confirmed cases and deaths is increasing.
McConnell told The Associated Press on Friday that there would be other packages and health care must be “at the top of the list.”
McConnell, R-Ky., Said Congress must focus on fixing any deficiencies in the previous $ 2.2 trillion aid fund and relying on health care experts for solutions to “erase” the virus.
Pelosi, D-Calif., Last week also supported his broader proposal for an infrastructure package to get people back to work, focusing on faster health care and economic needs.
When the governors requested federal intervention to provide the most devastated hospitals in New York and elsewhere with vital medical ventilators, equipment and supplies, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for better coordinated efforts to treat many sick people.
Schumer told reporters at a conference call Monday that he urged the White House to appoint a single qualified “king” to handle the production and distribution of medical supplies and equipment to combat the pandemic.
At present, said Schumer, the governor and other officials have no choice but to look for helter-skelter material.
“Everyone hunts and pecks on the equipment and supplies they need,” he said. “It doesn’t work. It’s like a hunt for their lives. “
Schumer, DN.Y., said he spoke with Vice President Mike Pence and the new White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and suggested three potential candidates for the job: two former deputy chiefs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, retired Air Force General. Paul Selva and retired Admiral James A. Winnefield, and retired Vice Admiral Mark Harnitchek, former director of the Defense Logistics Agency.
Trump, unhappy with Schumer’s efforts, accused the senator of being too political.
This will be the fourth package from Congress since the start of the virus outbreak. Two initial attempts were followed by the third one last month, which is by far the largest, most ambitious of its kind in U.S. history. With so much federal assistance expected to be pushed so quickly to the public, Congress is also trying to quickly stand up a surveillance panel.
Pelosi last weekend announced the formation of a House select committee with the power of subpoenas to monitor decision making and cash flow.
A broader supervisory board is being formed to track the Ministry of Finance’s spread of assistance to businesses, especially more than $ 500 billion in corporate and industry assistance at the discretion of Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
Schumer appointed leading economic adviser to Senator Elizabeth Warren, Bharat Ramamurti, as his choice for a pandemic response accountability committee formed by the newly passed law.
