HOUSTON – Two officers were injured Saturday morning when a Houston Police Department helicopter crashed in the northern part of the city.

The accident was reported around 2am near the intersection of Imperial Valley Drive and Greens Road near the Greenspoint neighborhood.

According to officials, the helicopter was used to investigate reports of corpses floating in the bayou when it crashed into an apartment complex.

Two officers who boarded a helicopter were flown to the nearest hospital to be treated, officials said. Officials said the two officers were in critical condition.

At around 4 pm, Police Chief Art Acevedo gave a briefing and said the pilot managed to hit the helicopter in a way that would avoid people in the apartment building.

Families of pilots and wounded officers were taken and rushed to hospital, Acevedo said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Agency will conduct joint investigations with the Houston Police Department.

Around 3am, when police were at the scene of the accident, Acevedo said that gunfire was heard across the street and three suspects were arrested. Acevedo said this was a separate incident not related to the accident.
