4 injured after explosion and gunfire on the ship at Charleston Harbor Marina | News| Instant News

Four sailors were injured on Sunday night at the Charleston Harbor Marina refueling station near Patriots Point after the explosion and small shots on their ship.

Mount Pleasant Fire Chief Mike Mixon said a boatman reported hearing an explosion at around 9 pm By the time the firefighters arrived, a small fire had been extinguished in the engine room.

Three people aboard were taken to hospital, Mixon said, and the fourth refused an ambulance but later sought treatment. Some injuries are “quite severe,” but none that appear life-threatening, according to Mixon.

It was not yet clear what caused the fire, but Mixon said it appeared to be a fuel accident. This is the only boat explosion the department has responded to in recent memory, according to Mixon.

The ship remained afloat, and there was no serious damage to the ship or the surrounding property, according to a marina manager.
